The Car Scrappage Scheme
Old cars represent a threat to the environment. Ideally they should be scrapped and replaced by newer and more fuel efficient cars. This is one of the driving forces behind the car scrappage scheme created by the government. When scrapping an eligible car it's possible to get £2,000 off the OTR price of a new one. The idea is great although we at Scrap Car Sevenoaks believe there are flaws in the government's plan. For example, it dictates which new cars you can have in exchange for your old scrap car. Strict criteria must also be met by the old scrap car in order to be eligible. We have listed below the requirements for the scheme.
The scrap car you are trading in must:
- Have a United Kingdom address on the registration certificate (also known as V5C)
- Have an in date (or within 14 days of expiry) tax disc when you purchase your new car
- Have been registered to you continuously for 12 calendar months
- Have a valid MOT (or within 14 days of expiry) on the old car at the time you order the new one
- Still be insured when you order the new vehicle
- Be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or Driver and Vehicle Agency in your name
- Be registered in the United Kingdom on or before the 31st August 1999
- Be a small van or car weighing 3.5 tonnes or under
Of course, few cars meet these strict requirements. Unfortunately, we've seen this lead to a lot of disappointed people in Sevenoaks who were hoping to profit from scrapping their car.
